University Food Services will be starting a new student board of directors this fall semester to give students the opportunity to be involved in the Food Services department on campus.
“Our partner, Sodexo, has a national student board of directors and we thought this would be a great way to better meet the needs of our students,” said Sharon Leevy from University Food Services.
When organized this fall semester, the board will hold bi-monthly meetings.
At these meetings, the board will hold a key role in voicing the concerns and needs of the students.
To cover a broad base of students, University Food Services is looking for students in a variety of circumstances, such as those who are in apartments with kitchens and those who are not.
Members of the board will discuss food initiatives, have the opportunity to sample new food before it is added to The Crossroads’ menu and participate in organizing focus groups and other events at The Crossroads.
Board members will also be secret shoppers at The Crossroads.  Secret shoppers are given a specific task, such as purchasing food or behaving in a certain way, and then provide detailed reports on the experience.
“This is a good opportunity to be a part of food services.  And who doesn’t like food?” Leevy said.
Leevy also said students who are members of the board will gain valuable marketing and leadership experience. They will also work with the culinary team and other campus organizations. “It sounds like an excellent idea to keep The Crossroads moving and on its toes. I would love to be a part of it,” said Brian Stanfill, a freshman studying sociology.
Applications are currently available for the student board of directors on the University Food Service’s website.
Leevy said they are looking for 12 to 15 students to be members of the board. It is a volunteer position.
Food services are also looking for students from various student organizations.
“Applications will be reviewed and positions offered around the middle of August,” Leevy said.
The student board of directors will also be the first of its kind in the west.
“This will be a poster child for other universities in the west,” Leevy said.
