President Kim Clark visited the I-Comm student media studio Tuesday for an interview discussing student involvement on the BYU-Idaho campus.

“We want BYU-Idaho to be a truly transforming experience for students, where they can truly become disciple leaders,” President Clark said.

One of the greatest blessings of being a BYU-I, Clark said, are the opportunities to serve others.

Clark said that there are activities, associations, organizations and other programs that are designed to get students involved.

“In part it’s about serving other others; helping move something forward but it is also learning: learning to get thing done, learning how to help other people. Those are the types of experiences that we hope everyone has at BYU-Idaho,” Clark said.

President Clark mentioned about how many different skills are acquired while serving outside of the classroom.

“Being able to recognize what needs to happen, figuring what the objective is and what is trying to be done here, and then making a plan, working with other people, making assignments, learning how to delegate, learning how to accept delegation and caring out an assignments,” Clark said. “Those are all great skills to learn and they will be very useful in [a student’s] life.”

During the interview, Clark mentioned that a great way to get involved is with the SRC.

“The purpose of the SRC is to get students on every council in the university. We have really tried to involve the student government with the governance of the university,” Clark said.

It was also said that the SRC is essential part of how the University is run.

“[Their involvement] yields projects and activities that the SRC gets tasked with and then they go out and recruit people to help them do things,” said Clark.

One example of this that President Clark gave about this was the recently introduced recycling program on campus where the SRC worked closely with facilities management.

President Clark also mentioned how the SRC benefits the administration.

“We have the benefit of having a student body president in there. Also [the SRC] is able to undertake projects that we would otherwise have a difficult time doing,” Clark said.
